Dundee

The pretty little town of Dundee, which has managed to retain much of its aesthetic rustic appeal, lies in the valley of the magnificent BiggarsbergMountain range some 325 kilometres from Durban and only 30 minutes’ drive from the neighbouring towns of Ladysmith and Newcastle.

Dundee was originally a farm owned by a Scotsman who named it after his hometown. The coal mining town of Dundee is situated in a valley of the Biggarsberg mountains in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (28°10′S 30°14′E). It is part of the Endumeni Local Municipality, Umzinyathi District. At first, Dundee was a farm (Talana farm), a personal property to Peter Smith, which he had brought from a Voortrekker settler, Mr Dekker. Three other men are credited with the founding of Dundee; his son William CraigheadSmith, son in- law Dugald McPhail, and close family friend Charles Willson.

Pioneer traders from the Indian sub- continent settled here during the following decade, when Dundee became the meeting place of seven roads into the hinterland and coast of Africa. Dundee lies in the centre of the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields.

For anyone interested in the colonial history of South Africa, this town is a good baseto explore the most interesting battlefields of the Anglo-Boer War and theAnglo-Zulu War. Many visitors - particularly from Anglo-Saxon countries - are keen to visit the scene of the "Battle of Isandlwana", wherein the year 1879 the British troops - 1300 well equipped soldiers - were virtually annihilated by 20,000 Zulu warriors. Also the battlefield at the Blood River with the impressive Voortrekker monument of the "Laager" of wagons and the Ncome Museum of the Zulus lie just a few kilometresfrom Dundee.
