3 Ways to Maximise Space in a Small Home

Category Advice

Clutter undoubtedly takes the joy and comfort out of living in a home as it significantly reduces space and makes a room look unbearably untidy. Many people experience clutter due to accumulating too much “stuff” over the years, whilst others, live in small houses that do not provide much storage.

If you fall under the latter, these 3 space-saving tips will help you smartly avoid clutter even in the smallest of rooms.

Your bedroom, bathroom, lounge and kitchen

1. Go vertical

A great storage solution for practically every room in your home is vertical shelving that can reach up to 2-3 meters or more. This solution helps eliminate dead space and in the process, makes your home look spacious, modern and neat.

For example, in a kitchen, vertical racks can be used to store and organise spices, cooking oils, tuna tins and more, whilst only taking up approximately eight centimeters in width.

In keeping with the theme of “vertical” use your walls and ceiling to smartly store an array household items. For example; in your bathroom, you can hang baskets on the wall above the tub or toilet to store towels, toiletries etc.

2. Multifunctional furniture

The world of space-conscious furniture design is never short of ingenious ideas, but alongside this, it is a playground for the outrageous and impractical. The list of questionable ideas is endless, from murphy beds to dining room table drawers - these can deter anyone from looking further into the topic. However, once you a have dived into the murky waters of multifunctional furniture design, you will come across a few gems.

Topping the list is furniture built-in with storage facilities such as beds, coffee tables, sofas, and ottomans. This type of furniture can be used to store items such as; luggage, winter woolens, shoes, clothes, bed sheets and blankets etc.

3.Corners and behind doors

Living in a small home means utilising every inch of space in a smart and effective way. This means that you have to eliminate possible dead spaces and one of the best ways to do this is through capitalising on your corners and the space behind and on your doors. Build shelves in the corners of your home to store books, home office supplies, and TV and DSTV remotes etc. Corner shelves’ curved or triangular shape not only saves space but infuses personality in a room.

The space behind doors is ideal for hanging items such as broomsticks, folding ironing boards and a range of household appliances. You can do this by fitting the space behind the door with hooks or hanging rods. In the same way, hooks on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door can be used for cutlery or pan lids.

Smaller homes, although more affordable, are more susceptible to clutter as there is limited storage space. However, through buying multi-functional furniture and utilising your space wisely and innovatively, even the smallest of homes can feel spacious, airy and organised
