7 Hacks For An Easier Move
Category Advice
Moving into a new home is always going to be hard work, regardless of the number of times you’ve embarked on this arduous “adventure”. However, there are certain hacks you can implement to make it easier, more stress-free and organised.
1. Remove Unnecessary Items
Before you get started, it is recommended that you first remove any items that you do not need, in this way you will not be packing and transporting unnecessary items that take up time, space and money. You can either donate, sell or recycle (if possible) these before you begin the packing process.
2. Decide On A Moving Company
Once you’ve lightened the load, it is time to decide which moving company you are going to use. It is best to get quotes from a number of companies so you can choose one who has the best reputation and capabilities, along with affordable prices. Don’t leave this until the final hour as your preferred company might not be available at the time you need them. And if they are one of the best, chances are they need to be booked in advance.
3. Start Packing In Advance
The packing process, ideally, should begin as soon as it is confirmed that you will be changing addresses. Remember, packing always takes longer than you think, therefore, you should start at least two or three weeks before moving day. It is important to note that the items that you use the least should be packed first, such as china and books.
4. The Best Packing Materials
Packing materials are not exclusively boxes, you can also use sturdy bin bags, which are ideal for packing soft non-breakables. In addition, bin bags are great for transporting your items as they can be stuffed into trucks and morph into shapes that boxes can’t – allowing you to maximise space.
5. Label Accordingly
Mark your boxes according to what you will need first with an easily identifiable symbol, such as a star. You can even pack these essentials in a suitcase or clothes basket for easy access. Every other box, containing non-essentials, should be marked with a description of its contents and destination (for example: bedroom). Also make a note if these contents are fragile, so when it is time to unpack, you will be reminded to handle it with care.
6. Create A Packing Room
Organisation is key during this process, but unfortunately it is very easy to create a disorganised space, resulting in boxes and bin bags lying around in every possible corner of your home. It is, therefore, advisable to choose a specific room or corner to serve as a packing and storage area. In this way, when it is moving day, you can quickly pick up your boxes and bin bags as it will all be centrally located. Furthermore, this will avoid your home looking unbearably untidy, which can in-turn, slow down the process and leave you feeling overwhelmed.
7. Save On Space
Many people empty their chests and drawers before they move, however, this is unnecessary and can take up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere. Instead, leave these full or pack them up with linens or clothes to save space during transportation. Likewise, don't pack hanging clothes, rather keep them on hangers and place them flat in the back of your car. You can then hang them back up in your new place.
Those moving into their new home can rest assured that there are many ways to make the process much more pleasant, and in the process, save you time, money (and a bit of sanity).
