Get Your Home Ready For Spring

Category Advice

Traditionally we think of Spring as a fresh start to clean and air out our homes for the beginning of a new season. The start of Spring means more socialising, braais and frequent visitors over to enjoy the upcoming warm days. It is normal for your home to get a bit cluttered and run down during the cold months of Winter, so don’t worry, we’ve compiled a list of easy and affordable ways to help you get your home ready for the new season.

1. Inspect and clean gutters

Cleaning your gutters can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home. When your gutter is overflowing with dead leaves and mud, it not only affects the appearance of your house but can also cause water damage. Therefore, it is important to get a ladder and ensure that your gutters are clear of any debris.

2. Organisation

A great way to start is by organising and cleaning out cluttered areas which frequently annoy you. Throw away or recycle items which you haven’t used in the last year and separate items which you frequently use into neat shelves or drawers.

3. Flowers

In the spirit of Spring, planting some new flower beds and placing or hanging new flower pots outside and inside can give your house the mini face lift that it needs and change the ambiance of the house to a more summery aura.

4. Landscaping

The exterior of your house is the first thing people see when they visit your home, therefore it is important that it makes a good impression. A little bit of landscaping can go a long way and you can start by doing a few low-cost tasks to freshen up your garden and pathways. Start by mending any cracks in your driveway, polishing your gate or fencing and ensuring that your hedges are neatly trimmed. Planting some fresh new flowers, installing new outdoor lighting and creating aesthetic garden pathways out of old bricks can make your garden look brand new at little extra cost.

5. Seasonal decorating

The days are getting warmer and a great way to stay cool and give your home a spring feel is by replacing darker colours with lighter ones. Replace any dark, wintry bed linen, throws, cushions and curtains with fresh, light colours such as: whites and light pastel colours. Darker colours tend to attract and absorb heat and so making a few small replacements around your home can ensure that your house stays cool and airy this Spring.

6. Small finishing touches

The small things can make the largest difference when it comes to decorating your home and giving it a fresh new look. Instead of spending a lot of money on new furniture or renovations, get creative and rather rearrange your furniture, buy some new couch throws and cushions, replace old lamp shades with newer more colourful ones, polish old doorknobs and make sure the windows a sparkling clean.

You can make your home look fresh and beautiful for Spring without breaking the bank or spending weeks renovating each room. By thinking creatively, organising rooms differently and replacing small finishes you can get your house to look Spring-ready in no time.
