Holiday Safety

Category News

Holiday Safety Before you leave home… Check that all your windows, doors and security gates are closed. Have your alarm and irrigation system tested and make sure it’s activated. Notify your security company and neighbours about your holiday plans and duration. Secure your home… Ask your security company to contact your neighbours in case of an emergency. Make sure your neighbour or a trustworthy friend has a spare set of keys, your alarm password, and a number where they can easily get hold of you. Remind them to switch on your lights and empty your post box. If no-one is keeping an eye on this, then install a timer to switch on a few lights at specific times. Make sure all electrical appliances not in use are switched off and closed; disconnect your gas appliances. Put your newspaper, magazines and satellite subscription on hold timeously. Bolt your safe to the wall and lock any weapons and other valuables away in your safe. Make sure your ladder is stored away and not standing outside against your house. Check you’ve renewed your insurance, and it’s up to date. -

On the road… Many car accidents are caused by poor maintenance, so make sure you give your car a thorough going over: check your treads, tyre pressure, oil, breaks, shock absorbers, windscreen wipers, battery and water and lights. If you’re towing a caravan, boat or trailer, check the wheel bearings, the condition and pressure of the tyres and spare tyres, locks and toolkits. Make sure that all canvasses and accessories are firmly tied down or attached. If you’re driving at night – set your headlight beam levels according to the load that your car carries or tows. Check if your spare wheel is in a good condition and the tread is good. Don’t drive if you’re tired, and take frequent breaks if you’re feeling fatigued.  (Article Courtesy Sanlam Reality)
